The Charlottesville Tom Sox defeated the Waynesboro Generals 3-2 Tuesday night to advance to the Valley Baseball League Finals vs a to be determined opponent.

Two-way player Rick Spiers (Sr, Randolph-Macon) started the game and earned the win for the Tom Sox. He put up another great performance, going six innings while allowing two runs (one earned) and seven hits while walking two and striking out six. Spiers also worked himself out of a jam in the 3rd and worked 1-2-3 frames in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings.

The Tom Sox bats were slow to start in the 1st, but quickly sped up in the second as an RBI single by Kyle Battle (So, Old Dominion) scored Jack Barry (Jr, Salisbury). Battle continued his hot streak this evening, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. His second RBI came on a single to left field in the 6th which scored Old Dominion teammate Vinnie Pasquantino (So, Old Dominion).

Waynesboro scored early on a fielder’s choice by McClain Bradley (Sr, Wofford). An error by third baseman Jack Barry advanced Malik Stephens (Jr, Tenn. Wesleyan) to 3rd and let him score to take an early 1-0 lead in the 1st. Waynesboro’s second run came in the 6th on a single by Patrick Cromwell (Sr, Clemson) which scored James Cosentino (So, Kansas). That was Waynesboro’s final run of the ballgame, as Bobby Hearn (Jr, Wake Forest) would work most of the final three innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out two. Tonight was Hearn’s third Tom Sox appearance of the summer. He got the win while going three innings with one run vs the Braves on July 27 and went one inning and allowed no runs vs the Braves in a game which put the Tom Sox in the VBL South Finals.

Cole Migliorini (Sr, Randolph-Macon) put the Tom Sox up 2-1 in the 5th on a solo home run off of Waynesboro starter Daniel Tolano (Sr, Tenn. Wesleyan). Aforementioned Kyle Battle created the eventual deciding run with a RBI single to score Pasquantino.

Daniel Tolano got the loss for the Generals, going five full innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs. Patrick O’Shea (So, St. Mary’s) relieved Tolano for the remainder of the game, going four innings while allowing three hits and one earned run.

The Tom Sox ultimately pulled off the win on a strikeout by leadoff hitter Jason Bush (Jr, New Mexico St.). They won 3-2, and advanced to 4-0 in the playoffs and extended their win streak to 12 games. They advanced to 36-10 on the season and 4-0 in the postseason. The Generals ended their season on a 22-24 mark (2-2 in the postseason).

The Tom Sox will play the winner of the North Division finals between the Strasburg Express and the Winchester Royals. The dates of the VBL Finals have yet to be determined and will be set at the conclusion of the North Division finals.
